JONATHAN JAMES MCGOVERN

Jonathan McGovern read History and English at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford, and received his PhD in English from the University of York. His main interests are in sixteenth century literature and administrative history. He is author of The Tudor Sheriff: A Study in Early Modern Administration (Oxford University Press, 2022) and The Little History of England (forthcoming in 2024). He is currently writing a third book, about the early parliaments of the reign of King Henry VIII. He has published over twenty articles and reviews covering a wide range of themes, from allegorical poetry to sixteenth century tongue-twisters. He has won several international essay prizes, including the Sir John Neale Prize, the Parliamentary History Prize and the Gordon Forster Prize. He has held a research fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022.
